I was getting my morning 'fix' on Lionel when the locomotive tender whistle picked-up and began whistling.  I am using a KW transformer and I tried both sides with the same result.  I noticed with a train on the track there was a small spark when I changed from the 'A' to the 'B' side even though the throttle is closed.   I tried several tenders with the same result.  To add insult to injury I pulled-up out my 1033 and as soon as I added throttle the whistle relay also picked-up.  It is hard to believe that both transformers have failed!!!!  Any ideas?  I am running a figure eight on the floor so there is nothing exotic wrt wiring just a single track attachment.

Well a little more process of elimination determined that the set of Lionel 6-29006 cars I had just put on the track (from a set of William's coaches) this morning was causing the problem.  I removed everything except the tender and no whistle relay pick-up.  I could operate the whistle with the whistle lever.  Putting the 675 and William's coaches back-on an I was in business again.  I eliminated my transformers from the problem but still do not understand how four Lionel coaches with only lights caused this anomaly???  Your thoughts and insight will be appreciated.

I am not familiar with the lighting used in those cars, but a flimsy power connection might have enough resistance that if the lighting in the cars is halfwave rectification, the voltage drop through the power connection wires will create a DC voltage at the track.  The current surge on the half of the sinewave used by the lighting would cause an extra drop compared to the other half of the sinewave, creating a DC component in the voltage..
