Reading lots and lots of reading. UP's website, reading several books and online about steam locomotive design, reading this thread, arguments and all, reading about 4014 and her rebuild, reading about UK engine design and railroad history and building which I find details of far easier to find, paying close attention to each word in a sentence and what it means and rereading to clarify if necessary, keeping an open mind as possible when reading, a small video collection on articulated steam locomotives and others, more reading and memorization, pulling every detail out possible. I could site sources but i can't find them all anymore just to many.

Well, I must say that whatever you have been ready, it has sure either provide questionable information or has confused you a bit.

I don't think that truth is either "slander", "libel", nor "defame" when it comes to the reputation of the current manager.

HW, if UP lacks the in-house employees to do significant portions of the restoration work, does this condition allow UP to subcontract the work to third parties which it would not be able to do if qualified personnel were already employed by UP?  This is primarily a question controlled by the union contract and whatever provisions it has regarding conditions under which UP can subcontract work.

The UP has used contractors previously for extensive work in and around the Cheyenne stop/roundhouse. The complete firebox replacement was done by an outside contractor, between 2000 thru 2004, plus both auxiliary water tenders were completely rebuilt by an outside contractor.

I think maybe they should ask help from the folks in Spencer NC. They had no trouble getting 611 back in action. don't ask the folks that destroyed the PRR K4 where ever it is rusting away in pieces. The folks at spencer should take a look at all the cant fix it cases.

Sorry but, your assumptions about the work on N&W 611 is incorrect. The N&W 611 was brought back to FRA compliance AT the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, but NOT by museum personnel. There really isn't any steam qualified workers at the Historic Spencer Shops any longer.

Also remember that the N&W 611 was in excellent condition when she was retired, and then when she was brought to Spencer.  She wasn't suffering from the problems that plagued the UP 844

One should also remember that UP 844 was not "plagued" with problems until a couple of years after the change in steam program management and the beginning of the high turnover rate among UP steam crew personnel.  Since then 3985 has not been operated and 844 has experienced problems not seen in other large excursion locomotives and things that are not deemed to be a problem on other locomotives are now grave concerns on 844 according to the current manager.

How many new stay bolt caps did N&W 611 receive before her return to service?
