Kenny,

How would I run the wiring to a TIU from a Lionel CW-80?

Using a CW80 with DCS is a bad idea for two reasons:

  • First, it's not on MTH's list of approved-for-DCS transformers.
  • Second, there have been many cases of problems when using a CW80 with DCS.

If after being warned not to do so, you still want to use your CW80 with DCS, wire as follows:

  • Connect the Hot terminal of the CW80 to the Red terminal on TIU Fixed Channel #1
  • Connect the Common terminal of the CW80 to the Black terminal on TIU Fixed Channel #1
  • Connect the TIU Fixed Channel #1 Out Red terminal to the center rail
  • Connect the TIU Fixed Channel #1 Out Black terminal to an outside rail.

I'll throw in that if you choose to use a CW-80, or any transformer that outputs a "chopped" waveform, you'll want to make sure the throttle is all the way up, as this will give you the closest thing to a proper sine wave output.  At full throttle the output of a CW-80 or other such transformer is almost, but not quite, identical to any pure sine output transformer.

I have a Lionel RW,and I have used it before through the TIU,but I thought the 'newer' CW-80,would be better to use.I'll just go with the RW for now,it worked fine before with a Railking Steamer that had a Proto 2.0 upgrade.

I just want to be sure because this is the first Premier engine I have ever had,and I  DO NOT want to FRY IT.  I also have an MTH z-1000 ,but I need to go get the banana  jack adapter to put it through the TIU.

Would it be better to just wait until  I get the adapter for the Z-1000,or should I just go ahead and use the Lionel RW,which IS on the list of approved transformers??
