I read that you can wire an accessory to one of the AIU switch ports. Is this really so?

Yes, AIU stands for Accessory Interface Unit, when wired you can activate your accessory and /or switches with your DCS Remote.

The switch ports only make brief contact. The accessory ports are remote-selectable to make contact only for as long as you press the button, or to toggle on-off.
I've used switch ports to operate accessories that require a pulse to begin action. Some of these would be the fire station, gas station, McDonalds and Mel's diner. It works well, but only for the action part of the accessory. The lighting is either wired on an accessory port, or no port at all as most are always on.
