I just received a like-new Lionel SD60 that I purchased from our sale section of this forum.

When I tried to run it on the club layout I could not get it to run in TMCC mode.  It would run in conventional but not the other.

The sounds did not work either.

I tried my Lionel GP30 and it worked fine.  So that is telling me that the layout is fine.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Rich

Do you know what address the previous owner gave it?Typically folks program locos using either the first two or last two digits of the cab number on the loco. It will not respond unless you do, otherwise reprogram it with a new address and see if that works. A loco is not "addressed " in conventional operation which is why it works.

Sounds to me like he lost the antenna or the antenna is shorted to the frame. Both will kill the TMCC functions and cause the engine to run in conventional all the time. Some engines use a strip of copper or a piece of metal for the antenna that is not insulated. This can come loose in shipping and drop onto the frame or some other piece of metal causing this problem. I would take the cover off and check all connections and plugs. Find the antenna and make sure it is insulated. If the receiver board receives no TMCC signal at all you will get no indication, no flashing headlight.

I recently purchased and item from a member of this forum and when it arrived it did not function properly either. A circuit board was floating loose inside of the unit (sounds similar to your situation, Rich). After I plugged the board back in, the unit still did not work. The seller said it was perfect before it was shipped it and he is not responsible for damage in shipping (he did not insure the package).

So off it went to MTH for repairs that I will have to pay for (not to mention the shipping cost). It won't be back from MTH for approximately six weeks as they have a backlog in the repair dept.

Rich here is the R2LC

If swapping the R2LC don't work, you probably have a bad motor driver, bad encorder board.

I got burned by a forumite sale also.  Got the engine on a Friday.  Was at the service station on Saturday with a burned out Pullmor.  Waiting for a new motor.  He said he hardly ever ran the engine or the set it came with.  The beat up manual is telling me a different story.  The motors were never oiled and after about 45 minutes of what I thought was break in time, it died.  I was going to run for more oil in the morning because I had just run out a couple of days before.  I have 10 pullmor powered engines that run beautifully because I service them regularly.  2 lessons learned.  Sorry, I got off your topic a bit...

Good luck with yours

Thanks Bill for your help.

I found the board you were talking about.  It was labeled with that number.

However, when I took the cab off my GP 30 the boards were installed different and the numbers were not the same.  So I decided not to take a chance and burn a board up.

I am going to take it to a service station.  There is one in Kittanning Pa which is close to me.  Thanks for your help.

I guess buyer beware is still in effect on this forum.  The seller said it ran.  Well it did,

not in TMCC mode thats all....
