Woodland Scenics Roads Help

So, I'm working on my layout, and its come time to start some roads. I was never happy with the different methods of roads I tried. I purchased a WS Roads learning kit, with the smooth it and top coat. I kind of like the method, but find its going to need another layer probably to create the right size curbs. Has anyone else built with this method they can give some insights on? Any methods that I should consider as an alternative?
