I am about to start construction of my mountain, and I need to purchase some rock undercoat from woodland scenics. I was wondering if I could substitute something for it. Which kind of paint (acrylic, latex, watercolor, etc.) do you think would work best?

I mean the product woodland scenics sells to paint your rocks. It looks like some kind of paint.
for just coloring over the white in the plaster mesh I use one of martha stewarts home depot colors in latex. for the actual rocks though you wanna use a wash, not full dose paint.

Often our mountains are a combination of different plasters, Sculptamold, etc.
These different materials absorb washes of color differently. That is why I always recommend brushing on a coat of ordinary flat latex house paint (cheapest available) to prime all the surfaces. That way, the entire mountain will take the color evenly.
You can use white paint if you want all of the color to be provided by your washes. Or, like I do, start with a basic gray or tan priming coat, depending on what you want for the dominant color in your rock work. Then go from there by adding additional washes of color.
