As John said, it smooths out the speed steps. Most TMCC locos tend to have a bit of a jump up to each speed step, especially the older the locomotive. Legacy smooths out the the speed transitions when your accelerating the locomotive. The biggest thing is that Legacy is a more modern component that is still supported and warranteed by Lionel. If you buy a used TMCC system and something quits your pretty much s.o.l

When I got my Legacy unit last year I only had 1 Legacy engine, several TMCC and several conventional engines. After using Legacy it became apparent quickly that the Cab1 had to go. Now I have 2 Cab2s but only one more Legacy engine. Not only does the Cab2 run the trains better I believe it's easier to use than the Cab1.
