Is the York Forum an appropriate place for us to post items we are looking for at York?

If so, I suggest we start, or continue, this thread with "Wanted Posters" so that if we see something at York and

know someone is looking for it we can text or call them. Has this been done before?

The "Wanted" poster is new, and sounds good BUT this is the sort of thing that the ban on walkie-talkies & cell phones was originaly about. Supposedly it gave some kind of unfair advantage to those that were doing it.

On another note, the poster reminds me of a picture that was posted around York some years back when the "Sixth Sense" movie was big: Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment facing each other and the kid's saying "I see train people. They think they're normal - but they're not".

I guess old habits die hard, and that type of thinking is as outdated as the rule itself.  Old ways of thinking that are best laid to rest with the rule being revoked.

There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with someone notifying a friend that they've located something that someone is looking for.  If they still have a problem with that concept, they have bigger problems in life.     This ain't the 1950's anymore... and York today is (thankfully) not the York of years gone by.

To date, the presence (and use) of cell phones has caused no detriment to all of us enjoying the meet.  And that's the way it should be in 20xx.

You guys crack me up. So far, you are talking about 3 different things:

Find (buy?) a item at York for someone who is not at York (this has been discussed before).

Send the name/email of someone who has the wanted item for sale.

Let someone, also at York, know where a item is, and you will "hold" it for him (this was the original reason 'phones were banned).

You gotta think this out, guys, as Joe implies.

One of the most often heard lines that a table holder hears is "Hey, I've got a friend who wants that. I'll tell him about it."

So would a dealer pull an item off his table without payment in anticipation of the phantom friend hurrying over to purchase sometime later that day? I've yet to have any of those friends stop by my table later.

Even less likely, would a dealer pull the item, email the friend, probably have to send photos of the item, take it home, wait for the "check that's in the mail", then pack and ship???? Most sell at shows to avoid shipping.

Gotta be realistic here.

I merely tried to suggest, though I was probably not sufficiently clear, if OGR members are AT the meet and see something another member, who is AT the meet wants, they can inform the member who can then walk over and get it. I never suggested anyone would ask a dealer to do anything. It seems like an innocuous suggestion to me but, I guess, here on the Forum we can make road kill out of anything. I'm going away now  . . . .

That's what I figured you meant Scrapiron. No different than posting your wish list on the other thread and having someone who is going to York or has a table e-mail you they have one for $XXX and you pick it up at York. I've done that several times, that's how I got my Williams UP E7 last year and the matching passenger set from Marty a couple years ago.

I see nothing wrong with what scrappy is saying. I have done it for years.  The guys I go with make up a list of what they are looking for and the price they will pay. We all get those lists and if we see something they may be interested in we either text or call that guy. No contacting the seller who has it, if and when he gets to that seller and decides to buy it then so be it.

We we did the same thing before cell phones by us all being in one building at a time and meeting every 30 mins to compare what we saw and where. Nothing wrong in that.

Scrappy, FWIW what you described is exactly what I was thinking you intended... Something very informal yet effective among friends.  How we got to having the seller "hold" an item until the phantom friend arrives is taking this to a whole other level that is a bit presumptuous on anyone's part.  Folks tend to make mountains out of mole hills here.  Better to take the KISS strategy.  I still think your idea has a lot of merit.
