I purchased my Z4K MTH Transformer in March 1998. Recently, instead of a nice "hummm", it sounds like the fan is laboring. Took a quick look and there is some cobweb material and dust that was around the base.

Is this something I can take the cover off (how?) and blow out with compressed air, or should I take to a authorized repair station for troubleshooting and help?

Thank you gents,

Paul

Paul,

If I remember right the rubber feet come off and reveal the screws holding the cover down. The hardest part of replacing the fan was getting the connector off the main board and fishing the cable thru. I replaced my fan thinking it was to loud but the replacement fan was just as loud. I bought mine also when they first came out and have no problems with it.

Here's a photo of the inside.

If snaking the wires is an issue, just cut them at the fan and splice them, no snaking needed.   There are many similar computer fans, some are a lot noisier than others.  If you are replacing the fan, I recommend spending a few extra dollars and getting the ball bearing fan, it'll last a whole lot longer and probably run quieter as well.  I'd stick with the lower powered fans, the more power, typically the noisier they are.
