I been in the KC Union Station several times.  Always come away impressed with the Great Hall.

Isn't Chicago's Union Station still in use?  I know it was used for Amtrak, but that was 10 years ago when I went there on the Southwest Chief.

Yes, Union Station in Chicago is still in daily use.  Amtrak and the local Metra all run out of it.  The last that I knew St. Louis' station has also been restored, but does not operate trains out of it.

Sure is. I ride in every week day on the Metra and it terminates in Union Station. Amtrak also has a large presence in Union Station with waiting rooms and a baggage claim area that is similar to those at airports with the moving conveyor belt.

That station also has many restaurants and bars.

It's been some time since my last visit to St. Louis Union Station, but it had been restored and repurposed into a hotel, retail, and restaurant concern.

I used to love going to the station and like you it has been quite a while.  My last visit, it seems like many of the stores had closed.  There used to be a pretty decent train store there.  They had a good selection albeit at mostly list prices.

I remember I was buying the Kline circus heavyweights and had searched high and low for the observation car.  Sure enough they had it! If I recall correctly, we were having dinner at Hooters and I HAD to open it and have a look in the restaurant! My wife wasn't so happy, but oh well!  After all, it was (and still is) her train! 

The St. Louis Station could also accommodate private varnish. There happened to be quite a few cars there at the time and was fortunate to be invited to tour them.

Hope to be in KC on Sept. 19th - 21st for a MLB Game - Tigers & Royals.

May now have to go by Amtrak.

Look forward to seeing the Union Station.

If you have time stop by Fred's Train Store in Overland Park. He has a nice selection of all scales but a good stock of O scale as well. Very friendly.  My favorite place to browse.

I was there in September of 2010. Here are a few shots I took. The architecture of these old stations are true treasures. 

There is an O scale/G scale model railroad layout in the Kansas City terminal which is open to the public.  Open at 10 am on Saturday.
