Working on the steamer will be easy. I'm going to order one of the replacement motors next week. As far as the U-boat is concerned that shell is very difficult to remove. I tried on mine removing the two screws in front and back but the shell would not budge. Called Lionel to ask them where the other screws are and they insisted that I send it to them for repairs. What a disaster that was.

The shell is actually in three pieces. Front cab, rear section and the center. My understanding is that the center section snaps into the frame. When I got mine back from Lionel customer service the center section was not tight to the frame and I had to use a lot of force to close up the gaps.

Also, watch out for the little antenna on the roof of the cab. They break just looking at them. If you do decide to work on these engines you might leave the front hang over the end of a foam cradle so that you don't break anything.

Good Luck.

You shouldn't go below the rated impedance on solid state amplifiers.  The output transistors are not buffered to the speakers so the lower impedance increases the current in those transistors causing more heat.  It will work to the point the heat sinks cannot shed the additional heat buildup and destroy those transistors.
