This is the second time posting this, and I'll leave it at that.

I have purchased the complete Bush Funeral Train with the 2 expansion packs. In order to have the Lone Star Business Car in the proper place in the consist, the scale coupler on the rear of the car needs to be replaced with a normal Lionel coupler vice the scale coupler that was installed and shipped with the car. I did receive one reply yesterday with a solution, to use a dummy coupler that is drilled out to fit the post under the car. I was hoping someone else will chime in and also offer up a solution.

Thank you and Merry Christmas

Chris, not sure you saw my post yesterday or not. I used a lionel dummy coupler, modified to fit the coupler box. I looked at trying to install a kinematic coupler as is found on the other end but the rear skirt would have to be removed to accomodate it. My coupler has a short reach but I expect to run it on 096 curves minimum. Using one with a longer shank will allow somewhat tighter curves.

If you missed the post I can repost the pictures of what I did.

Pete,

Yes, I saw the post before it was deleted. I did find a dummy coupler that may work on the Bay. I like the idea of replacing the truck. You have a P/N handy? I'm not wanting to modify the car, but that may be the only option in this case. A question I have is, Where is the mounting hole in the replacement truck? Is it in the same place as the one on the car?

There is one version of these trucks with silver side frames that is still listed as available on Lionel's parts site with (see below), which I have worked with. As Pete says, the coupler is at the end of a long shank which comes mounted to the truck itself. The mount is therefore to the metal frame of the truck, which will be a very long way back from the stock mount on the rear of the Lone Star car.

I think that these might have been originally a K-Line design and were used on 18" and 21" aluminum cars that had skirts on the sides but nothing across the rear of the car. To use them, you'd have to cut away (a large) part of the Lone Star car's rear skirt.

But I'm not sure that the replacement truck would mount very easily to the Lone Star frame, although both use a post and c-clip arrangement. These trucks also require a bracket that has tabs to fit into the frame (one into a slot and the other being screwed down), which was constructed to allow for this part:

The truck Pete mentions also used a bracket but not the same as the one pictured. Anyway, I mention this because I am in the middle of a similar exercise to fit a standard coupler to the rear of the Lone Star car and have decided to use a dummy with a slightly longer shank (I have one spare from a different project I can use). I am not keen to cut away part of the rear skirt although the car will have to negotiate O-72 curves.

Chris, if you have a dummy coupler coming I would try that first. Its just a matter of removing the scale coupler and fitting the dummy to the rear most post and see how much swing you have. I made the shank of the coupler as thin as possible to also maximize swing. Because it will be coupled to a car with a kinematic coupler that coupler will be doing most of the side to side motion. Run it around your layout to see if it works. Trimming the skirt is a last resort.

Exactly! That's the plan currently. Just have to wait on the dummy to arrive.  Modifying is a total last resort.

Ok, I got my dummy coupler delivered 2 days ago and I had to grind down the mounting end so it fits in the coupler pocket. I got it painted up and is now mounted to the car. Please see the attached pictures. Looks like it'll work just fine... Thanks Pete!

Wish I could have gotten an operating coupler, just need the manual release. But that'll never happen...
