353 Circus Locomotive Paint

Give this a try.

Port Lines sells the correct red for the 353. It is listed at $24.95 for an 11oz spray can.

We have it in Collector Color 1/2 pint cans for air brushing.  Harry

I am still trying to decide what paint to buy for ny Fake 353 Circus Loco.  

I have emailed Doug about the two different cans he has, one is $12.00 and one is $24.00 have any of you used either one?

Doug needs to clarify the use for each of those paints. To possibly help here are some pictures of my mint condition Circus set. The two on the mantle are in indirect sunlight, the one of the engine on the wrapper is in direct sunlight. The 353 red is slightly different than the red on the hard to find red circus flats.

You have some beautiful Circus trains there, and thank you for sharing the pictures.  I do hope Doug can let me know the differences between the two paints.

I am going all repro or parts box building here.  My plans are for a Smoking Circus loco with Choo Choo and wire handrails.   This will be a runner for both home and Train Show use.

If you want a Circus loco with wire handrails and smoke it requires some customization since the Silver Bullets did not have wire handrails. Perhaps go all out and use a PRR K5 for the Circus engine. Take a look at Joe Deger's Tuscan K5, it just needs Circus red rather than the Tuscan paint. The pictures are at sgaugers.org/td/td_jd_06.html. The custom Circus engine he made is the wrong red, too bright with too much yellow in the red mix.

Aflyer, in the interest of helping you spend your time and money here are closeups of four of my Circus flats. They show some of the variety in cage and roof colors as well as animal types and colors.

The Circus engine paint is not high gloss, it is a mid semi gloss with a low yellow content. that shows well in the pictures above.

I have met Joe, he is a member of ACSG Tidewater Division, I belong to the Carolinas division.  Amazing guy who does amazing work.  The Tuscan K5 is another beautiful piece of work.

Thank you for the detailed pictures they are all a little different.  I have ordered some repro loads.  And I am even using Repro plastic Circus flats.

I have already ordered repro wire handrails to add to the 356 turned 353, LOL.

Install a can motor, especially if you are going to run it at shows, for greater reliability.

If you're referring to $12 paints vs $25 paints...........quality; color accuracy; amt of pigment; drying time; coverage.....

Ok, nice of Doug to lay it out bluntly like that. My assumption that the color match was different is obviously incorrect.
