Now THAT is funny!!!! I mean REALLY FUNNY!!!!
Awww sugar!
Fake news?
Oh, and I forgot to answer the "R U RETIRED" question, even though I dislike all these "texting" abbreviations; no. I'll be on the June 24 & 25 4449 excursion from Portland to Bend, OR and return.
Sorry Jack, I do get lazy. Funny, I hate it too sometimes.
How is this 2018 plan different than the Yellow Ribbon Express that was going to go on tour in 2008......I mean 2011......oh wait.....

EXACTLY!!!!!!!
I never saw those before now, until I did a search. It's a shame.
100 million? From donors? Pal I got a better chance on getting a seat on a trip to mars than on yet another RR planned nationwide excursion
The 'news' story is simply based on some declarations Ross Rowland made at the Freedom rain reunion in Portland last September. I was there and got to talk with Ross, but I really don't think even those there left seriously thinking it was going to happen.
Sure, he pulled off some really neat stuff in the 60s and 70s, but we all know the RR industry is very different than I was back then.
As much of a Freedom Train fan as I am, even for me this falls under the, "I'll believe it when the completed train actually departs for the first display site" heading.

A steam train on CSX. That is a, "How tomorrow will not move!"
What about putting 614 back on the road. That aint happening either.
A few years ago I heard him talk about this subject. He had several engines he wanted on the tour, including 611, 614, 819, 4449, 844, 765 (east coast spare), 700 (west coast spare). So I guess he has lowered his ambitions a bit...

1) On WHAT road? It is currently land locked at Clifton Forge, on display at the C&O Historical Societies HG, and on CSX.
2) And do what with her? She is also do the FRA mandated 15 year boiler inspection and recalculation of the Form 4.
I think such a train today would be too much of a target. And those wishing to target may have nothing to do with AQ or ISIS.

Too many foamers would be watching every move for a terrorist to likely be able to do anything to it.

That brought me to remember this cartoon panel drawn by Hal Kattau, part of a page of cartoons published in the Summer 1976 RAILFAN. All of the cartoons had a theme of imagining the complications if railroads were existent when America sought its independence from England.

Considering what happened recently at a rally in Portland OR, that might just be exactly the MO of attack. Blend in with the fans.
Chris Carter in THE X FILES got it right: The truth is out there, but do not trust anybody.

614 was just repainted or cosmetically restored right? She does look good anyways. There was a post on her here the other day?

I don't know any behind the scenes stuff. I just wish the best for anyone trying. Seeing what it costs nowadays, makes me jitter.
I think it's amazing that there are still opportunities to see and ride on these trains.
Sorry if this causes any grief. I thought Ross Rowland might still be a key player. I know just enough, to get into trouble...... like this!
Dumb Question: Will they actually paint the 4449 in American Freedom Train scheme again.....or use a wrap

A "wrap" on a steam locomotive?????

Per a post made by Mr. Rowland on another forum 614 is NOT landlocked. It came into Clifton Forge on the Buckingham Branch RR which is ex-C&O trackage leased from CSX. Mr. Rowland also posted that moving 614 out of Clifton Forge is not the issue - getting CSX to welcome steam on CSX trackage is. He hopes that may change in the future - until then 614 will remain displayed at Clifton Forge.
True. Ross has made many statements concerning that, but the fact remains that there were/are some very high managers on CSX that were REALLY upset over that "middle of the night" move getting 614 into its current display site. Now, with a "new sherif in town", i.e. EHH,,,,,,well, we'll just see.

Well, it's been done with road names on several occasions. So the question isn't quite as crazy as you might make it out to be.
But as for Freedom Train colors, 4449 was painted back into those colors soon after 9/11 for a while. I was lucky enough to have seen the locomotive and ridden behind it in that paint scheme. I've been especially lucky to have seen it twice and it paint scheme, once around 2002 and the other time in November of 1976. I think it's highly unlikely that Doyle will repaint the locomotive to that paint job again, unless he paints it back from some other paint job somebody insisted on, like when BNSF asked they painted it solid black for their Employee Appreciation trips in 2000.

A wrap would melt!
Pretty sure they wouldn't wrap the smokebox or firebox....
Most of the color on the AFT was applied to the side skirts. Even if they wrapped a portion of the boiler, there is an insulating jacket around it; I'm not sure it would get hot enough to melt plastic, but maybe.
Let's forget wraps. They work fine on city buses, where the only appliances applied to a smooth surface are the clearance lights, a few vents, and maybe an air conditioning unit. Trying to apply a wrap to a steam locomotive, with all its appliances, panels, piping, and railings, would be impractical at best. Cleaning a wrapped locomotive with the industrial chemicals used for locomotive washing would also be a bad fit.
Wraps are for other equipment.
