The countdown is on! Only five weeks left to order your very own DOTS and Crows candies boxcar from the Railroad Museum of Long Island!
In 1864, Joseph Mason and Ernest von Au created Mason & Au Confectioners at 81 Fulton St., Brooklyn. As the company grew and added "principals" Emil Zollinger and Louis Magenheimer, a large six story candy factory was erected at 22 Henry St., Brooklyn in 1892. [Interesting side note: the historic Long Island Rail Road freight house at Greenport, NY – that today houses the RMLI – was also built in 1892!] Crows and DOTS candies were made there until 1949.
Following World War II the Mason, Au & Magenheimer, Confectioners relocated to a brand new modern factory at 150 Old Country Road in Carle Place, again on Long Island. There, using the property’s new railroad siding, the Long Island Rail Road delivered tank cars full of corn syrup to make the candies!
Today, along with Tootsie Roll Industries, we celebrate the Long Island beginnings of these World Renown candies with this beautifully decorated LIONEL 9700 Series boxcar.
