I'm finding online tutorials a bit confusing.  Would someone please guide me so I don't burn up this switch?

I'm powering 2 layouts with an older ZW transformer.

I located this link:  https://www.lionelsupport.com/...ents/71-6631-250.pdf

I happen to have a couple of 5906s.  My transformer will operate a bell or horn with each switch, but the only way to switch from bell to horn (or visa versa) is to switch leads to the transformer.  Does the 5906 accomplish that task?  Is it possible to wire one 5906 to both track layouts?

Thanks in advance - Ponz

To answer your first question, Yes. The second, no. The 5904 was meant for around 50 watt starter set transformers. They are not recommend for transformers like ZW's. They have only very small diodes inside and will fail in short order. Also note in the instructions the 5904 was meant for the old MW style of transformers.

SORRY!  I have two 5906s....

Or, if you are using a Type Z / Type V etc., w/o any whistle or bell control, or the C/D posts of a ZW, you use two:

I'm sorry Rob, but I'm still not clear.

I'm running 2 trains with my ZW.  One on channel A and the other on Channel D.  Naturally, I can only activate the bell or the horn on either channel - one or the other.  How does the diagram above allow me to switch between bell and horn on both channels A and D since both switches are connected to one track?

Simple. Wire your ZW with "U" to all #2 Lockon clips(outside rails) for whistle/horn control on the ZW, and use this diagram:

To add a bell button for each handle... one for "A", one for "D". Use the one you have now for one side and save up to buy another later.

If you really are running two separate isolated layouts/loops, you can accomplish the same function as switching the wires by using a DPDT polarity reversing switch wired in line with the lockon. One position for whistle/horn, the other for bell:
