I have a 9304 operating coal dump car. I picked it up at a recent auction. It does not want to stay in the “ closed” position. That is to say it wants to continuously dump. I am trying to understand how the trigger assembly and the trigger pin work together. Is one of them supposed to be magnetized? Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciate it

Without a photo of your car, I would guess you're missing the metal "finger tip" (part 3362-12) that goes on the bottom of the dump tray. If that part is missing, you'll see a hole in the bottom part of the dump tray. The photo below shows dump tray is the black part right above the number of this train car. The dump bin, with the swinging gate door, is attached to the dump tray.

If you go to this past thread: https://ogrforum.com/...rack-operating-track, and scroll down to the 3rd photo, you'll see the metal finger tip engaging with the plunger. That metal finger tip comes in contact against the plunger and that's what holds the dump bin/tray down. There's nothing magnetic about the car itself, though you need the magnetized operating track to pull the plunger down and dump the car load.

Thank you for your quick response Brian. The fingertip part 3362–12 is on my dump frame. I guess my question is is it just a friction fit between the fingertip part and the trigger assembly that holds the dump frame in place? My dump car will stay closed when you close it but as soon as it begins to move it dumps. The fingertip is touching the trigger assembly. I guess it’s possible that it was used so much that the parts are worn.
