Picked up a MTH 9E. Thinking about adding the pilots to make it a 2-4-2 wheel arrangement. Looked on the MTH website and parts catalogue and could not find anything for this. I know MTH manufactured some 9E’s this way. Anybody know the part number or have a pair of pilots they would like to part with. My email address is in my profile if you would rather contact me that way.

They were problematic with the pilots so many people removed them. Someone might have some for sale.

The 9E's with the pilot wheels were very prone to derail on 042 standard gauge curves. They would probaby run better on 072, though I have had no personal experience with the pilot wheel 9E's.
Interesting. I had not heard about the problems with the pilots. Gives me something more to think about and consider. I do see where they could be a problem on O42 curves and switches. Thanks for the feed back.
Another thing I have observed about 042 curves: MTH 408E's run "tighter" on them and slow down somewhat. This is all very curious, since the original Lionel curves were 042! All standard gauge runs optimally on 072 or larger diameter track.
Yes, I have noticed this also. I set up a little floor layout awhile back using both O42 and O72 curves with my original Lionel 408. It took the O42 curves however, it was very obvious O72 curves were better. Had to rethink the standard gauge layout after that little test. Looking to use O72 and O84. In a limited space, this may cause another problem for me.
I have had some with them that are ok,other are pia, guess they just kinda bounce around under there
I use 57” track on my outer loop.
57” radius?!? Did you custom make from Gargraves or is there a tubular manufacture producing this radius?

USA Track LLC Makes it and other sizes. Good stuff. http://standardgaugetrack.com/

Thank you Sir. Will check them out.
