I just got my UP/CNE WBB this week. As I look at it, it looks "too pretty to run". Does anybody have an engin like thike that?

But when I put it and my OK Engines aluminum passenger cars on my 072 12x12 layout I wish I had more of a longer run to let them "air out"

I have the MTH European series 241.A with elephant ears. It is the best model train I have - as good as many brass locos I have seen: incredible detail, delicate add ons, fantastic paint. I run it, particularly since it has the best whistle of any loco I have, but I am very careful with it and don't run it a lot. It is just sooooooo beautiful . . .

It's no good to me if it won't run.
If it is good enough for the shelf, then it is good enough for the track. I have heard of guys not running their postwar engines because they have "all original" parts. They are afraid that they can't find replacement parts so they keep them in the original box.
I've run everything, O gauge, G gauge, with one exception. It's a brass G gauge model of the Lilly Belle, the train that Walt Disney ran in his back yard, from the Carolwood RR Historical Society. Maybe some day I'll get around to running that too.

Well, I have run my UP engine. I call it the "John Deere", or the "Cheezehead" (GB Packers) because of its colors!
I have nothing that is too pretty to run.
I do have some that are too big to run on my current layout, as they need O-72 curves. Hope to have the layout rebuilt over the Summer so that I can run everything!

having more trains than tracks to run them on (i suppose the definition of a collector), i never forget that much of the value to me is that they were built as working models not static displays. believe me, if you don't run your trains occasionally, eventually they will stop working, or at best run terribly, all on their own.

For an investment of almost $300, oh yeah, I would definitely be running that engine. If you just want to look at the engine the UP website has a nice pic in .pdf format that you can download. It only costs you if you get a laser print made for framing.
Since I have a 773 Hudson from 1950 for running and it operates so well, I keep my 1-700E (1990) which has not been run in its display case above my desk. Tempted at times to run it, but doubt that I will. If I didn't have the 773, well..... Dick
I think there is nothing sadder than a train that never runs (or will never run again, in the case of the 1:1 train).
I will run everything I own, eventually. Some engines, like my SMR "General" and "Texas", which are the most beautiful locomotives I own, will be run sparingly though.

Like the Lionel scale PRR S-2 Turbine at the train meet here in Tampa for $400.00 I was really tempted but my max curve is 054 and it's min is 072 so I had to pass it up or it would have collected dust the shelf.

The Santa Fe 5011 Class 2-10-4s are even BIGGER than the Madam Queen #5000 on display in Amarillo, TX! Plus all axles are roller bearing.
