have never seen the Lionel AEC reactor. The description of the action is interesting. How is it in person? Does it work smoothly?

Cool!
Relatively smoothly. The mechanism seems to work well, but there is the issue of the metal balls in the gondola needing to be "guided" towards the magnet to be picked up. (or you would have to keep nudging the train back and forth to get them all - not an easy task)
(the return of the balls to the waiting canister (% that make it) after being "processed" is actually pretty amazing IMO)
Some forum members have made a special trough or ramp for the gondola to make the balls all gravitate towards one point so the magnet can get them all.
The dumping of the pellets into the gondola is I think pretty good, not too many end up going overboard.
It's extremely colorful when lit up (multi colors flashing through the dome and the area behind the trap door where the glow in the dark pellets come out is also lit).

I love mine. It works great. I've had it since about 2001. No issues.
I consider it one of the best accessories on my layout. A bunch of us contributed to the following thread on it: https://ogrforum.com/t...ear-reactor-question
Check it out

thanks guys. i would like to get one, but can't really figure out where to put it.
Inside a reinforced concrete, lead lined, containment building.

I;m waiting for my oldest to finish her Nuclear Engineering degree, before I get one. Too expensive, if she decides on a different path.
I really enjoy mine and it does take up some space but well worth it in the corner yard.
":Solution: MAKE LAYOUT LARGER. "
not really an option, if a serious suggestion.
not willing to make significant track design changes either.
can someone give me the depth measurement, please? i am assuming it is the 12" dimension, but want to be sure.
Forrest -
From Lionel's website (lots of info there...) the dimensions are:
6-24294 15"X12"X8.5
I have one, no space for it (or so many RR things; bigger house is needed). I bought it
for the realism. No, really. Right up there with the Giraffe Car.

I hear that will be offered in 2015 Volume 1.
Guys. I can see what the dimensions are, but which is the width and which the depth?
Joe, why are yours so different than what is published?
I just re-measured mine.
Length 12.75"
Depth(Width) 8.5"
I assume the 15 is the height. I did not measure the height.
If you want to account for the handle which sticks out on the one side for the manual crank, the the Length is 13.75"

12.75
I can only assume the specs were printed before the actual unit was made which is why there is a slight discrepancy.
Thanks. At 8.5, I have some options.
