Why would you fit a $30 engine with a new electronic reverse unit?
Because the customer asked for it, and the customer is always right even if they are possibly wrong. Or something like that.
Why would anyone invest thousands of dollars, maybe tens of thousands of dollars, possibly six-figure's worth of money and countless hours of time in little toy electric trains that in the vast majority of cases will depreciate in value and be left to family members who couldn't care less about them when the owner dies? Because it gave the owner joy. Try not to be a crabby old man in the process.
