The Marx 666, 1666, Wm Crooks, 333 & 1829 came with puffing smoke. So did some of the H0 Hudsons. Marx smoke units generally would out smoke Lionel. Some 1666's and a very few 666's also smoked out by the steam chests. None had in the tender air whistles. Like Flyer, they probably could not get around Lionel's patents. Marx did come out with an in the tender electronic chugging unit, the Sound of Power just before Lionel's Mighty Sound of Steam. Both used white noise with a timing mechanism, but the Marx unit was self contained in the tender and has proved much more durable than the Lionel system. Archaic by today's standards, but very cool in the early 70's.
Then there was the powder puffing smoke units. A bad idea even in it's day
