OGR is very pleased to announce that Nicholas Smith Trains has joined us as a Forum Sponsor!  Chris, Joey, and the crew have long been a supporter of our magazine and now are adding their support to the forum.  Nicholas Smith is a long time name in our hobby and many of us have been customers of theirs over the years.  Some of the very first trains I received were in the days before the internet and over the phone through the Nicholas Smith mail order telephone line!  Please click on their banner located on the 4th row to see the vast inventory they have to offer.  Join OGR in welcoming Nicholas Smith Trains as we add them to our family of forum sponsors...

Thanks,

Alan

Before moving to Kentucky in '09, most of my train purchases were from Nicholas Smith in Broomall, PA. In fact, it was a day in 1995 while my son was taking his MCATs at the University of Pennsylvania, that I had several hours to kill and was looking to get back into trains. I drove out Route 3 to Nicholas Smith's. Up to that point, the last time I was in that store was when I was 12 years old and they had this very compact store on (I think) 8th Street in Center City Philadelphia. I was thinking about HO and then I walked up the steps to the second floor where the trains were and what was facing me was a wall of what O'gauge had become in the intervening 50 years. I was blown away! It was when MTH first came on the scene and 3rd Rail was just coming into O'gauge also. It was the rebirth of O'Gauge and concurrently my rejoining the railroading community.

A great big welcome to, "Nicholas Smith Trains". Our Forum Sponsor list and the Advertisers List in OGR Magazine is starting to read like the "Who's Who List" in the world of O-Gauge trains.

My first exposure to mail order trains and related supplies was so long ago. I remember going over and over the Nicholas Smith ads when my grandfather bought his supplies using a stamped envelope. I remember the long wait looking for our mailman to deliver our box of supplies. Only the "rich" could afford to order by telephone. Every long distance call back then was person to person with operator assist. Before the introduction of Nationwide 800 Service.

It has been a pleasure using Nicholas Smith as my dealer since I re-entered the O hobby.

Always great prices, really nice people, and they have so much varied inventory (more than is what is on the website).

They are more than a two hour drive from my home, so mostly they ship my orders to me. But, luckily, I sometimes have business in Philadelphia, and I always make it a point to stop at the store, and I always stumble across something I could use. (And, its an excuse to get a cheesesteak at the adjacent Thunderbird diner   )

I was just wondering ...... who was/is Nicholas Smith, the namesake?

He moved to one of the Dakota's. Towards the end of his time there whenever I came in he would ask me if I saw anything I wanted. I'd always say the more easier question to answer was what don't I want. He would get a good laugh.

Welcome to the forum NS! They have been my long time LHS as well!
