Hi All,

Sometime ago I posted the following link about about the Lionel tt-100 coupler.  It turns out I never purchased the TT-100 attachment/coupler as I decided to purchase a new "Lionel Corp Tinplate" (LCT) engine - which has the "manual latch" couplers just like my pre-war 607s and 608.

Today's question is more about the compatibility between these "manual latch" couplers and the "box" auto couplers.  I'd like to join the MTH MTHRRC Lionel Corporation 2800 Series Club and hook up the membership cars to my new LCT engine with the auto couplers, but I'm not sure they will connect because these cars appear to have the "box" auto couplers.

What's interesting is that the MTH club Std. Gauge club cars appear to have the coupler I'd prefer, the manual one, but both O gauge LCT and MTH Tinplate Traditions club cars have the "box" auto couplers.

So, if anyone is out there who connects these "manual" couplers with the "box" auto ones, I'd love to hear their story.

Thanks again for everything and best regards...Rich Murnane

In my experience the box couplers work fine with the latch couplers. Some cars even came with the box cover, but were manual.

When I run prewar on our modular club's layout, I try to put a box coupler car between each latch coupler car. They seem to stay couplered a bit more reliably that way.

All my cars are 600, 1600, 2600 type cars. Other types of cars may work differently.

Here's a shot of a train with mixed couplers:

Hope this helps,

Murnane,

J gives good advise, stagger the cars every other one for best results as you build your consist, they seem to stay together a lot better.  However for the very best results run all the same couplers at the same time.  When you have a lot of experience with Tin Plate Rolling stock you can even mix the 800 series and the 2600 series if you know what you are doing.

J, that is a way cool train buddy!

One of my favorite work trains has both the big 810 Crane Car & the 2660 Crane Car with identical loads on them as they move down the track.
