Also, is there any way to find out when "real" trains go through select tracks around the country? Or do you just camp out at an overlook and wait? I suppose contacting a local club might shed some light on schedules.

The only place I know of is Bull Street Station. It's been a long time since I was in Savannah, probably late 1980s, so things have probably changed. Back then they had little O gauge stuff, mostly HO I believe. here's a Yellow Pages lisitng:

There was an Italian restaurant nearby that had great food. We stayed at the Hilton Savannah Desoto Hotel back then, pretty nice place and near the historic district.
In Port Canaveral: http://www.traincity.com
I dont know if they have an actual store front but they do sell a lot on eBay.
Also, there are sometimes train shows in Melbourne but dates are not posted yet.

Thanks, I'll send them an email before I get there in early February and ask.

Thanks. I had seen the listing for Bull Street (should have mentioned that), but their website doesn't list MTH. I figured I'd head down there anyway. If nothing else, maybe we'll have some Italian food. We'll be staying out in Richmond Hill at our daughter's home, but they'll be at work/in school, so we have time during the day.
I was last in Bull Street Station about 3 years ago and, for an O gauger, it wasn't worth the time.

Round House South has a ton of MTH and a operating layout
It is on US1 near Daytona if you want to stop on your way to the Cape
This the store that MTH makes "Chick fil a" cars for
4611 Ridgewood Ave (US 1)
Port Orange, FL 32127
Check out
RailServe.com
They have a list of model railroad retailers by region.
In Savannah GA you have a real railroad roundhouse that might be worth a trip to see, other than the Bull St. Station. There used to be another hobby shop going east of downtown Savannah and a mile or two north of the roundhouse museum, they used to have O gauge stuff.
In or around Daytona you have the Roundhouse South, located a few miles south of St. Augustine, which is the home for Florida East Coast railroad.
Looking for hobby shops, go to www.hobbyshoplocater.com and type in the city. I hope I have the correct website.

Bull Street Station is no longer at its old location on Bull Street in the Savannah Historic District. The stock has been moved to a private home for now. The store serviced mostly HO, though you could get paint and scenic stuff there. They have started selling on the web but the old hobby shop has closed. Another store out on Route 80, Second Chance Hobby closed two years ago. I don't know of any other stores in the Savannah-Hilton Head SC area.
These were taken at the roundhouse in Savanah

Train City does not have a retail location that you can visit. I’ve asked before and they said no.
The Melbourne show is the first Saturday in March, June, September & December. There is a show in Jax in February which is on the way between Savannah and Cape Canaveral.

Yeah "Bull St" is no longer open in Savannah. I was going by on a business trip and when I finally found it the woman inside said all the train stuff was already moved to a private residence and that they were closing the store. I guess I got there a week late! I couldn't find any other train places in Savannah.
Thanks. For some reason, I didn't expect to find much, so it's not a huge disappointment. I saw the other threads about San Antonio, etc., so I figured I'd ask. I guess I'll just have to make it a point to plan a stop in Atlanta. There is a good chance I'll be in Atlanta for a couple of weeks in early July for my grandson's baseball camp, so it should not be a problem.
As far as Florida goes, I'll be going from Savannah to Key West and then either on to New Orleans or back to Savannah in June with no set schedule other than a beach wedding in Key West on the 7th, so if there is a particular store/place/event pretty much anywhere in Florida that I shouldn't miss, I can probably find the time.
There are two decent hobby shops on Florida's east coast; Ready To Roll in north Miami and Roundhouse South near Daytona Beach. The other hobby shops mainly deal with remote control cars and airplanes.
Sad to hear that so many hobby shops have closed up, Savannah should have a couple of hobby shops being that they used to be a trainhot-spot years ago.

Yes, it is. I'm sure mail-order has taken its toll, but I suspect the economy is more to blame. I remember a day when you could walk into any major retailer, like Sears, and see stacks of train sets. Now most of those that still carry trains sell them mostly online. I just checked Sears and found they sell MTH products online, though it's through unbeatablesales.com. Trouble is even my LHS beats their prices once shipping is added. I must admit that surprised me. But much worse is that they only carry only a few items, like an 031 left turnout, but no right, yet they carry the 40-4000 transformer for $550+. I get upset that my LHS only stocks RealTrax and not ScaleTrax, but I'm sure he has his reasons. If this is the best we can do in Phoenix with over 3M people, it's no surprise Savannah has nothing anymore.
