I have two A-B-B-A sets.  I like both the balance (equal # A and B units) and symmetry of this arrangement better than any other possible combination of diesels.  Shown are the engines from the Santa Fe Anniversary Passenger set from 2000 - these are not quite scale size but close enough, and a set of BEEFS bashed and repainted for my "army man" train ( I had a lot of fun with that).

my super chief is not on the layout at the moment.  my ABBA is also from the 2000 set.  the 11 car consist is made up cars from that set (with upgraded trucks) and more recent ones also from Lionel.

i had to change the trucks because the drag created by the old ones would cause the train to string line on one of my curves.  they all roll fine now.

my only problem with the engines is the rather anemic sounding horn...like a bleating sheep.  this arrangement is powered A, powered B, non-powered B, non-powered A.

Matt, those are great looking engines but I really like your backdrop.  May I inquire where you found them.

Happy railroading,

Don

Actually I don't think that is a "backdrop", but the California Bay Area hills in the background, i.e. he photographs his diorama in his back yard. Darned good photography, I'd say!

Actually it is a backdrop from Backdrop Warehouse.  It's 17" tall.  Here are the REAL California hills that are right behind my house.  Matt
