They are used often for cab lights, firebox glow lights, etc. They use pins on a .1" (2.54mm) spacing and they fit pin headers and some wire end connectors. They must be 18 or even 24 volt because they are often tied directly across from roller to chassis ground. They might also be available in other lower voltages.

18V is #8099; #8098 is 14V and #8097 is 12V. It is a T-1 (3mm), bi pin bulb with a G1.27 (or G1.3) base. Most parts guys and the usual bulb sources should have it. Less useful voltages are also available.
Lionel part 8082-19 or 8011-09.
Here is a source, pick your voltage. Lionel uses 12 and 14 v versions. For applications like cab lights and firebox glow a 14 v will work though be a bit dimmer but would last almost forever.
