Regarding MTH PS-3 locomotives:

I have a BNSF SD-70 that I purchased in one of those ready to run freight sets a couple of years ago.
It came with a Remote Commander and works well in the remote environment.

I am looking at some other PS-3 locomotives and need to know:
Are all PS-3 locos remote ready?

Also, what about PS-2 and PS-1 locos?
Are any of those remote ready?

All DCS locomotives will run with the DCS Remote Commander.  However, they MUST be factory reset in order to be recognized by the DCS remote Commander.  For new PS/3 engines, you can do the reset with the DCS Remote Commander, for anything older and all PS/2, you must use a full DCS system to do the factory reset.

PS/1 locomotives are conventional only, they will not run with any DCS remote.

This was posted previously, here it is for your reference.

Here's the  DCS Remote Commander button sequence for a factory reset of newer PS/3 locomotives, starting around 2017 I believe.

  1. Set the engine on the rails
  2. Connect the DCS Remote Commander
  3. Press the following buttons in the order listed below (remember - you are pointing the remote at the IR base, not the engine)
    • SND
    • DIR
    • - (this the minus symbol indicated when you press on the bottom half of the center, gray rocker)
  4. You will get a two toot response from the engine and it will now be alive with lights, sound smoke, etc

You now have control of your DCS engine at its Factory Address and you are now able to run it with the DCS Remote Commander

Thanks JR-J

Good to know the PS-2 locos are also remote capable.
Regarding the reprogramming, my LHS is only about 15 minutes away, so that is not that much of an issue

BTW, what type of batteries to the PS-2 and PS-3 locos have in them?
Are they 9 volt that would take a BRC?
I have an extra and wondered if I should put it in my PS-3 SD-70.

Also, do any of the PS-2 locomotives, have programming issues like I have heard about the PS-1's?

PS/3 locomotives have no batteries, they have supercaps as part of the board design.

PS/2 locomotives come in two flavors, from 2000 to around 2004, they had 5V boards with 9V rechargeable batteries, then they transitioned to the 3V board with the 2.4V rechargeable batteries.  Around 2011, PS/3 hit the streets and batteries were history.

PS/2 and PS/3 locomotives have their own programming oddities, but bad batteries don't scramble them like early PS/1.
