I'm a Seahawks fan, as is my wife.

That said, I wouldn't buy one because the following reasons I have no need for it:

  • It's a fantasy scheme (no matter how well done it is)
  • It's modern
  • It's three-rail

I wouldn't buy one of these lettered for Florida State, my alama mater, either, for the same reasons.

Now, as for all this anthem stuff:

Though the national anthem was first played at a sports event during the Civil War, it's mostly a throwback to the days of baseball in WW2 (once public address systems got good enough to play recordings of it). There was a lot of public outcry against baseball continuing during the war, and the anthem was a simple tactic to show how patriotic pro ball was. Eventually, most other US sports used it.

In the 1950s, the Baltimore Orioles decided that playing it before every game cheapened its impact. The general manager at the time decided that he was going to only play it during special occasions.

The Chicago Cubs owner felt the same way. And he did not play the National Anthem before every game until the 1960s, during Vietnam.

In the 1960s, the Chicago White Sox experimented with substituting "God Bless America."

Frankly, I'm a vet myself and I have never seen the need for it. A sports event isn't a patriotic one inherently, and the National Anthem has always seemed out of place for me.

No more NFL for me. Why should I respect them for disrespecting our nation.

This isn't a political statement on a train forum. I'm just saying NFL engines and rolling stock won't be purchased by me and maybe the manufacturers need to take note that if others feel like this there'll be less need to make these products and pay licensing fees.

Another perspective from a vet (26 years in the Air Force and still serving as a civilian).  Whether or not the National Anthem is out of place at a sporting event is not the issue.  Wherever and whenever it is played people should show respect and stand, preferably with their hand over their heart.

I have never been a stick and ball sports fan, however I am a NASCAR fan and enjoy the anthem before the race.

During the National Anthem is not the time to draw attention to yourself veiled as a protest.  Everything has a time and a place.
