My speaker blew{????}. It is 4ohm-3watt in the ps2 diesel upgrade bd. Working good for a year in my upgraded Williams f-3, but was never very loud, ummm. Does anyone know of a good manufacturer, other than wait, wait, wait, for MTH. Tom

I use speakers from this company. Depending on the engine they may or may not fit. Diesels are tough to fit. Easily installed in a dummy running 2 wires back. 830970 is excellent but any 4 ohm one is good probably better than the stock one

Here is a general thread on speaker replacement

Was the 4 ohm speaker stock? Normally the ones I've seen are at least 8 ohms. Maybe that's why it wasn't that loud?
John, PS-1 and Locosounds are 8 ohm. PS-2 5V (original PS-2) are 16 ohm. PS-2 3V systems (current) are 4 ohms. G
Thanks, I happen to have an upgrade kit for a diesel sitting here, I guess I should have looked at the speaker. I didn't realize they went to the 4 ohm speaker for the 3V PS2. Just out of curiosity, what are the PS3 speakers?
The speakers Dale points to are most likely the best if you have the room. I think the ones listed as 2" or 50mm are actually 50mm which is closer to 2.2".
They were too big for my application and I ended up using these which are a true 2" diameter frame:

Dale,John,Norton, thank you for your input. GGG that is really good info on the ps-1,ps2-5v.,ps2-3v. Thank you all very much. This forum continues to amaze me. I will order today.Tom
PS-3 HO is 8 ohm, I need to check again on the PS-3 O/G.
Remember the larger speakers are 50mm dia, but only 17mm high.
Then some applications are 45mm dia, and 40mm dia. with even lower heights.
Steam is usually easier to handle larger speakers, but the diesel fuel tanks are more problematic. Need to measure the height allowance. Some frames also have smaller openings for the speaker magnet to come through. Most 4 ohms have a larger dia magnet, but there is a BF-0000043 which uses a tapered magnet (wide to small dia). This is a used in the switchers.

Tom,
Not going to be too helpful here but wanted to make a comment in the event that it helps you and/or anyone else.
I had a 5V engine blow its boards. Wanted to keep the engine so I had the LHS do the only option that was available - change it to a 3V system.
It took the LHS and MTH working together close to 8 months just to get a speaker installed!!!! The 3V speaker was bigger than the 5V speaker and between the 2 of them they couldn't find a decent speaker that would fit, including non-MTH ones. The LHS ordered several speakers over those 8 months but either they too wouldn't fit or the sound was crappy.
having no option, the LHS sent it to MTH and said "here, you fix it". MTH had no speaker to fit and landed up having to shave the area that the speaker fit into to get one to fit.
The sounds are OK but not as good as they were when it was 5V.

Walt, I too have a bad bd. on my 5v.-sd24. Been down awhile. I really like this engine so will keep it. The horn is awesome. I guess I will order a ps2 upgrade bd. and do the upgrade myself when funds improve. Tom
Walt & Tom, I believe there is a special 3-volt kit available that connects to the 5-volt connectors.
Robert,
I believe there is a special 3-volt kit available that connects to the 5-volt connectors.
That's correct, however, you still need to swap-in a 4 ohm speaker, and 2.4 volt battery and charging jack.
GGG: interesting that you mentioned "Example SW1500.". Mine was one!

Just to be clear, there is not a special 3V kit. Techs can order the 3V boards with 5V connectors.
Or the wiring harnesses can be changed to 3V plugs as the 5V contacts will work in a 3V plug..just swap the wires out.
Walt, Yep. Here is the other solution for your issue. Swap the 16ohm speaker for a 8 ohm from some of the PS-1. Those pancake speakers are available. This will reduce the volume some, but not as much as the 16 ohm speaker. Simple fix to keep a SW running. G
