So I am reading Barry;\'s DCS Wi-Fi Companion latest edition with the layout abuilding in the basement. At the end of one section he slyly slips in a sentence that changes everything. It says "it's a good idea to locate TIUs so that there is a direct line of sight between between the WIUs and the DCS application whenever possible. This is best accomplished by physically placing the TIUs so that they are at or above the height of the tracks whenever possible."

Huh-what? Mount them on the wall up high? I have low ceiling so they could go on the ceiling. My complaint with both approaches is that the wiring has to be run up to them. I'll be running wi-fi as well as handheld controllers. So the WIU will have to go next to one of the TIUs up high. Then a wire will have to run down from each TIU to the AIUs mounted under the layout.

The amount of wiring going up to these units is becoming prodigious. 3 TIU power inputs of heavy gauge, 12 power outputs for the blocks and 3 phone cords to the AIUs. Then too I want to run the TIUs through the AUX power in so there's 3 more pairs of wires. So Barry's casual sentence under TIU placement is causing me to do a lot of work. And so far he has not offered to come over and help.

I expect to have 3 TIUs running 12 blocks using the variable outs as fixed outs --so four fixed outs per TIU times 3 TIUs is 12 blocks (good math, huh?). Switch machines and accessories and lights will have their own separate power supplies. I also expect to attach to a TMCC control base and run a mix of DCS and TMCC-controlled trains. I don't expect to run any conventional trains as of now.

So where do you have your TIUs mounted and how is it working?

My one TIU is mounted under my table along with the WIU, and two AIU. I get problems with the remote itself losing signal, but my phone picks up the WIU without any issues, my phone sometimes picks up engines better then the remote does on my layout, that will more than likely be changing soon maybe.

Don,

Where do you live? Maybe I could come over for a beer. 😀

Seriously, while higher is better, lower is also good as long as the TIU has an unobstructed “view” of the DCS Remote or the DCS WiFi device.

My 3 TIUs are located at the inner edge of my around-the-walls layout, under the lowest level, and they work fine.

John, I would pick a building that is wood or plastic with good air flow. Metal may mess with the radio waves. Even with plastic, which likes to build up static, I would run a ground to and allow it to discharge.

Thanks Dave--I'll get to work on this. For me, there's no room for wood or plastic on my tinplate layout (other than a few modern trains), but I'm up for a challenge.
