I am new at this so please forgive any mistakes.  I received some post war Lionel items from my dad.  Things i remember playing with as a kid.  I am trying to build my first Christmas layout and having some trouble.  I would like to run 2 trains at one time (I can figure that out).  Also if I only have one train on the layout, i would like to be able to change its direction using switches (thought that would be easy but the track is not lining up right).   Ultimately I would like one layout that could do both.  Wondering if it is possible with what I have and if not what I would need.  I have tried using scarm and still can't figure it out.

Area is 10ft 6in by 4ft (in a corner)

Everything i have is post war Lionel O27 only standard 45's and straights, plenty of track

Have 4 - 1121 switches

Have a couple crosses also but i don't think that matters.

Every way I could think to get close on scarm, the switches wouldn't line up. (even when just trying to change direction)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

First, welcome to the Forum, Mak. Since this is a Christmas layout and if you intend to make it seasonal, I would recommend that you make your track plan it as simple as possible. If you want two trains running at the same time, consider two parallel independent tracks. You can use the switches for sidings.

Good luck with this project.

Hi MAk,

Welcome to the forum. if you would upload your SCARM file I will take a look at your fitment issues.

it is common to have to cut some custom length tracks to make a plan fit.

Either way, let's see what you working and we'll try to help you.

A figure 8 will do  everything but run two trains at once, unless you daring.

Thanks for your help.  I hadn't thought about accomplishing it like that.  I think i just had it stuck in my mind that it was one continuous track, but it does not have to be.

I attached the closest i had before i saw the one you posted.

A major problem on mine was how to keep up with the switches constantly changing and them hitting each other.

The one you posted solves those problems.

Thank you guys again for your help and suggestions.  I checked out the latest plan and it looks good.  My fault, i didn't mention, at the moment i have 2 lefts and 2 rights.  If I need a couple extra things to do it I will get them.

I am not quite clear on the insulated sections.  I have the fiberglass pins but not quite sure about how to place them in conjunction with the switches.

Yes, two for each switch if in fact they are the 1121, not 1122/1122E.

Check again to see which switches you have. 1122/1122E do not need the extra work of installing insulated sections.

Here is what is needed for the 1121 models:

using 154c clip-on contactors. The wiring is the same using insulated rail sections in place of the contactors.
