I think you are to a rather nice start. Your shelving looks very good.
I see the makings of a fine magazine article here!

Sean, nice progress! The display case is a great idea.

Sean,
Very nice. You have sure done a lot, since you got under way, in October.

Zeke.....very impressive progress on your benchwork and layout. Question for you--how did you attach the 2 x 4s for the upper part of the layout. I tried that in one of the early stages of my layout construction and never could get it stabilized.
Hi Sean, really enjoy seeing the pictures of your layout in progress! Regarding the lift bridge, looks very interesting! there was an article in OGR Run 261 (Jan 2013) on building a lift bridge. Bill Bramlage has a fantastic layout, and he shows his hinge system as well as the receiving point for the bridge. Its worth a look.
Cheers,
Very envious of the clean work space, no matter how hard I try to dress up the basement of my 100 yr old house it still is a basement. But I will keep trying. Good work, keep showing!
The end that's shown resting on the plywood will of course drop below a little bit. There will have to be a catch of some kind on the opposite end to hold everything in place when the bridge is down. My biggest concern is getting it to the correct height so the top of the bridge track matches up with the track on the upper level.
Looks great. We have done them by running the track thru the installed bridge and building the bottom support to meet the bridge piers. And you can install the hinges at the same time so eveything is aligned.
A tip: always leave your bridge closed when you are away from the layout. This helps maintain the line up of the two sides. Your bench work will expand and contract with the seasons even with your best efforts to humidify and dehumidify. You may also want to brace the two sides together by screwing a piece of stock, 1x3 or so, across the gap on top of the two tables while you are bumping around building the rest of your layout. This will be an annoying "duck under" for awhile but will protect your bridge assembly. You can remove it when you are done with that side of the layout.
