GRJ, I'm only using these for powering external LEDs and accessories, so they're low draw devices. I do realize those are generously over rated. I'm surprised at the heat created though.
Well, the efficiency isn't perfect, certainly no more than maybe 85-90%. Clearly way better than a linear supply that would have gone into orbit with those currents, but still the regulator is dissipating power and generating heat.
