I can't answer your question with accuracy.  But I have done the same and found subtle difference between crane cars.  I think it is best to watch ebay when close up pictures are available, go to train show, or call the Train Tender.  Jeff, may have an original.  There are after market ones that will work too.  G

The crane boom is normally the first thing that breaks.  Original Lionels were cast from hard plastic.  The boom was modified during the production years but any boom will fit any car, to include the new colorful Modern era booms.

 

Some repo booms are very flexible, a little short, (the pully/guy wire assembly hole doesn't match up with the hole in the boom) and the casting isn't too precise.  I avoid these when replacing for customers.  Most repo booms are spot on and readily available from parts dealers.  Some are available with the top pulley and rivet attached.  Under ten bucks.
