Has Lionel made the C & O 4-8-4 "Greenbrier", which was, evidently, the last steam locomotive to be produced in the U.S.A., in 1948? If so, when?
Thanks,
George

I don't think so. However, MTH did make two runs, one in 1999 with ProtoSounds 1, 20-3035-1, and one in 2007 with ProtoSounds 2, 20-3277-1.
Stuart
..and I have the one by 3rdRail (2007; coaches 2008).

The C&O Greenbrier was a great locomotive, but by no means the last.... that distinction goes to the N&W S1a Cab#244. It rolled out of the N&W Roanoke Shops in 1953.
Lionel never produced a Greenbrier, only MTH and 3rd Rail (Sunset). I believe the last steam loco for a Class 1 railroad built by a commercial builder was the C&O H-6 class 2-6-6-2 produced by Baldwin in 1949. Like Gilly says the last steam loco for a Class 1 railroad was biult by the N&W for the N&W.
Here's what the only surviving Greenbrier, the 614, looked like last year before it was repainted in The Greenbrier Resort colors.
The Greenbrier might be the youngest American steamer still in existence, if you discount a few *s, like the Leviathan, the John Bull replica, etc.
Ya gotta admit, they sure did "Go Green" with that paint job...YIKES!!!
At least it's protected. This is better than just leaving her outside to rust to death. Mike Wolf, please do not make a 614 with this paint scheme! There's a very good reason why these things are supposed to be black. Coal is black. Nuff said.
You can tell I haven't won the Powerball or MegaMillions Lottery. If I did there would be several million dollars spent with a "do whatever it takes" attitude to get this and several other sleeping giants back under steam.
I do like that cast pilot. Reminds me of a couple other outstanding locomotives...

Well, it's not a Fantasy Paint Scheme unlike others. And Southern sure did look good in Green. I'd rather have it painted Pink with Purple Stripes and running than Black and sitting around.
611 sat for about 20 years before hitting the rails, so all is not lost. I do think we need a fund in the US for preserving and OPERATING steam treasures like 614, 611, & others.
As a follow-on question, I thought Lionel had advertised or catalogued a C&O
Pacific with all the gingerbread (flying pumps, brow-mounted Elesco, and coal-fired
Vanderbilt), but I have never seen one and never thought to search eBay for one.
Did they produce one? I would jump on one of the similar C&O Mikados from anybody...

They did produce the F-17? George Washington pacific with vanderbilt tender. I've seen a few and they are quite nice looking.
I am not an organizer, so don't look at me. If each and every model railroader in the US sent ten bucks to an escrow account for 611, it would be done, and they could use the leftover for a new boiler for 2353 here in SoCal.
If I thought everybody would do it, I sure would. I think that is part of the idea behind the outfit that restores and flies B-17s.
HMMM. Pink with stripes.
Let's get Mike into the thought process.
This is my GG1, and the picture was taken at my friend, Marty Fitzhenry's house.
My MTH Greenbriar PS-1 is such a strong puller I had it converted to PS-2. It is also a very handsome replication of the original. I also have a photograph of the original on my Den wall under steam at Sand Patch when it was still operating excursions.

Now there's a plan. And perhaps if people were charged by the page of what they post on public internet forums?
I'd rather see a NYC Hudson built. It is my understanding there isn't one of them saved.

Thanks, Alex W: Guess I need to make a concerted effort to find one, although I'd
much rather have a Mikado..were any of these two (C&O Pacific or Mikado) saved? I've seen bigger C&O power displayed...including a Kanawha, recently.
Back to the model?
Most of the parts came from the East Coast.
