What is the hole that looks like an ear piece jack used for that is on the top side of the Cab! handpiece used for? I can't find any reference in the instructions.

Lionel had a BIG RED Button that connected to the Cab1 with that port.
You could give your guest the BIG RED Button, if your last command from the Cab1 was to blow the whistle on an engine, if they pressed the button the whistle would also blow.
I'm still laughing as I type. Thanks, Blayne
Blayne, the big red button was designed with Neil Young's handicapped son in mind, though the concept extended to small children as well. It may have gone out of production prior to the discontinuation of the TMCC command set, once Legacy and the cab-2 came along. They are probably kind of hard to find, and rightly so.
The CAB2 still has the jack for the BRB, but the CAB1L has omitted it.
I have one...pretty cool actually back when.
Well several things come to mind this Sunday morning. After reading and rereading this thread I want to thank all for the history lesson. In light of this I want to say that my laughing comment is quite inappropriate. What appeared to be very superficial at first read became very meaningful. The second thing that became apparent is that no one got their knickers in a wad and flamed me. I'm thankful for the info and I'm amazed how much of a class act this forum is. I'm proud to be a member. Blayne
We don't normally do that, but if you insist.
Really, it was a valid question, and as you say, it never occurred to you why that would be an option.

I didn't know the jack was carried over to the cab-2. Just goes to show you how much attention I pay to my $300 doorstop. I'd have to go flip through the old catalogs to figure out when the BRB was last made.
Blayne, you didn't know the history of the button. Don't feel bad, but that's why I explained it. We're here to put you on the right track.
Still have my BRB. Used it when I did TMCC demos way back when. The little ones loved to blow the horn or whistle.
You could also make one for a lot less, it's just a SPST pushbutton!
