If you can afford it look on ebay or the buy and sell forum from time to time.  I got a 990 set barely used for a great price. I run a lot of legacy loco's plus I wanted more than one remote for other operators on my layout some day. the price difference between a legacy 993 set and the 990 set is only about $50.

This way with another 990 set  you have a spare base and remote for a backup. my 990 base went bad and lionel fixed it for free. while my defective 990 base was at lionel I just used my other good 990 base. like I said if you run mostly lionel stuff and can afford it it is nice to have a spare set for times like this. I even use my second remote from time to time even running trains by myself. the 990 base just serves to hold the remote on my control panel most of the time. although it can be used at any time if I wish for either a backup if my original base craps out again or on my christmas layout set up during the holidays.
