For some reason, I am hard on Lionel CAB-2 remotes. I've been through several, and apparently the only way to get a new one is to purchase a full #990 or #993 set.

My main problem is that some keys on the CAB-2 become sticky and refuse to make contact. Also, the red velocity knob tends to freeze. Is there some type of lubricant to apply to the keys and/or velocity knob to free them? I have tried Deoxit spray, which has only temporary (or no) effect.

How hard are you pressing on the buttons? I've seen some guys trying to mash them through the back of the hand held. The rubber buttons won't press in? Have seen when you press them nothing happens. We had one red dial fail on a TMCC Cab-1 for some reason if you shook it the train speed would change.

The sticking seems to be caused by dirt or other debris that accumulates around the edges of some buttons. Something to clean out and lubricate around the buttons would help.

I've sent CAB-2's back to Lionel several times for other problems, mainly for numbers on the keypad that stop responding to touch.

FWIW my Cab2 is in the cradle button side down to keep dirt off of the buttons. Of course if use the base as a charger this doesn’t work.

Just drape something over the buttons?   Unless it is in a really dirty/dusty environment with greasy hands they stay pretty clean on all devices we have.
