Cab1 Throttle Wheel

Find an old dead CAB1 and swap the knob assembly.

@gunrunnerjohn.   Does the Cab1L suffer from the same type of failure?     If not, I may start looking for a Cab1L remote and base.  I understand that route may take a while.

Well, I suppose the CAB1L could have the same failure, but neither of mine have experienced it.

Thanks John.   I wasn't sure if it had the same internal components.    1. If it did could they be sourced and used in the Cab1.   2.  I have another used Cab1 coming from Trainz.com. If that one fails I may start looking for the CAB1L and Base1L.

Not sure where to find a failed Cab1 with a good throttle assembly.

The BASE1L may be problematic as it's out of production.  Dave Olsen just posted that the CAB1L's were in and would be shipping to dealers.

Yep, I read that.    I was hoping to find a used Base1L, even if it meant waiting for some to become available when the Base3 comes out.

When the BASE3 is available and any bugs worked out, I suspect there will be some Legacy command bases available, those work just fine with the CAB1L.

Hard to tell from the pic and I've never had one of these apart but, if the wheel is loose on the shaft and you can get the wheel off the shaft, you may be able to insert a small piece of paper or cardboard in the void to take up the slack and then press the wheel back on - same principle if the shaft is loose in the holder.

Richie, I wish it was that easy.  The knob and shaft are tight into the component that does the work. The component is loose and its out of stock at Lionel.

Drop me an email, I just found an old CAB1 that had a board that croaked.  It appears the big red knob and encoder is still there and complete, maybe that will fix you up.

Has anyone seen a "FIRM" Commitment from LIONEL on the release of the NEW CAB3.  ??

There is no firm commitment that I'm aware of.  Dave Olsen recently stated summer 2023, that's the last semi-firm commitment I've seen.  They do have the CAB1L remotes

Thanks, I hear Fall of 2023 for the Release of the CAB3.  I better take good care of both my CAB2's  &  CAB1L. Make sure they last until then!!  LOL

You could put a rubber band around the CAB-1 case and let it drag on the throttle wheel.

The CAB-1L has a similar wheel, but the sensors inside the case are totally different.

Hi Ward , I just saw this post. I believe that’s the one I sold you a few months ago.I never had any problems with that cab1. The red wheel worked perfectly from day one . I had been using it regularly before I shipped it to you and it was working fine then. I’m sorry you’re having an issue with it. I hope you can get a fix on it. I see gunrunnerjohn, might come to the rescue.

Hi Ron, Yes it is the Cab1 you sold me BUT it worked great for the first few days I used it.  The knob did not wobble those first few days.

The knob got wobbly after I kind of "flicked it" to slow down a train.      I have no doubt that you sold me a Cab1 in good working order.    All is good.

@RoyBoy  The rubber band did the trick for a quick fix.  I had to double the rubber band that I had and I put a little bit of talcum powder between the band and the wheel so the wheel slid on the band instead of sticking to it.       It worked well.    

GRJ was kind enough to send me the broken CAB1 he had. I'll try a more permanent fix this week.

That's a great solution.  The problem can be fixed in a few minutes with a 1/4"x1/4" square of masking tape!

How about a KNOB that is a little "Stiff"? (Just the opposite of your problem).  What is a Good FIX.??

If anyone needs a Cab1 remote for parts I have one. Several of the contacts in the battery compartment were damaged due to a leaking battery. Otherwise the remote is in great condition. My contact info is in my profile.
