Can DC motors run on AC and Vice Versa

I know that DC motors can run on AC power if a rectifier is installed to convert the AC to DC. But am I right that hooking a DC motor directly to, say, a 20 volt AC supply will wreck the DC motor? Also, will an AC motor (eg. a post war Lionel) run on a DC power supply? I used to know the answer to these questions, but now I can’t remember. Must have hooked my brain to the wrong power supply. Thanks.

Yep, you can't run the standard can motor on AC. OTOH, the AC Pulmore runs fine on DC.
