Have a MTH 20-2557-1 that works fine via DCS.  Wanted to grease and oil them, sine it has not been used for years if ever.  The main works fine in the cradle, but when the slave is plugged into the main, there is no movement in the slave, lights in the slave work fine.  The main unit still works when the slave is plugged in.  I have other MTH ABA units where the slave works fine  in a cradle.

Am I correct that if the slave unit was dead, the main unit could not pull it, it would be too much of a drag.  They run fine slow via DCS, forward and backwards.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

Yes, if you try to run the slave dragging you will throw traction tires and over load the lead unit.  Will not run right, so you need to figure out what is going on.  Normal slave board failure is running all the time or run only one direction.  That is for PS-2 engines.   So check harness connections especially motor leads.

If your lights and such worked you probably had power to the slave unit.  As Chuck said, that is required.  G

Thanks

Since it works fine on the track via DCS, the motors are working.  It was just not working in the cradle, but I did not have power going to the slave.  I am sure it will work when I put power to both.
