Hello Forum,
I was looking to try and get some older TMCC smoke units back to life. Reading through some old post I see mentioned to:
1) Repack the unit. What am I using to repack?
2) Replace the heating element. The last post had a reference to part NKN200JT-73-20R. This part seems like it is unavailable at the moment. Is there a good substitute?
3) Finally drill out 1/4 inch hole. What exactly would I be doing here?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The wicking PN is cs-691SMKP008-p.
You don't necessarily need to replace the heating element/ resistor. Many of the older TMCC locomotives have a fiberglass sock over the element. Carefully removing the sock so the element comes in direct contact with the wicking, improves the smoke output substantially
I also change the smoke resistor for steam to a 20 ohm 2W wirewound resistor. For diesels, I leave the 27 ohm resistor as I don't think diesels need any more smoke.
Either of these will also work well as a replacement resistor for TMCC smoke unit upgrades. Just break off the ceramic around the resistor (lightly crushing in a vice works great) and you're good to go.
These are the ones I use: Yageo SQP500JB-20R 20 Ohm 5W. 20 ohms gets you the best smoke from a steamer while still staying within the safe range for the RxLC triac's power ratings.
