Hi all I just rebuilt the smoke unit on this K-Line by Lionel semi scale Hudson. Look how awesome the smoke output is by just changing the batting and drilling out the air intake, the resistor is the same it was in great shape.
Thanks, Alex

Nice work Alex! I see (hear) that loco got the 4 chuff mod as well! Now I want to buy one of those k line hudsons and send it to you for upgrades in lieu of buying a vision 700e.
Pretty impressive. Much simpler (and less expensive) than converting to PS2, no?
Pete
Holy Cow Alex....where is the gas mask???
Great job...
Alan
Thanks guys,
RickO, yes I did the 4 chuff upgrade, and this Kline by Lionel Hudson is a very nice solid well running engine.
Norton, very inexpensive the only thing I purchased was the batting for about 2.00 dollars and it only took about 30 minutes to do the upgrade.
Thanks again, Alex

Alan could you believe that, how much smoke output just by putting a lot of batting and drilling out the air intake hole. It smoked out the whole train room.
Thanks Alan, Alex
What kind of batting did you use?
What kind of batting did you use?
JDA I use this type of batting it's a pad type it seems to hold a lot of smoke fluid
I get it from (BOXCAR BILL) he's a member on this forum The name of the company is Modern toy train parts. see photo below YOU MUST PACK A LOT OF BATTING IN THE UNIT BUT DON'T BLOCK THE PASS THROUGH FOR THE FAN TO PUSH THE SMOKE OUT.
Looks like it's on fire!
All you need for four chuffs/rev is the magnets and one magnetic reed switch. You just wire it in place of the existing chuff switch.
JUST LIKE GUNRUNNERJOHN SAID ABOVE THATS ALL YOU NEED, BUT HERE'S THE LINK TO A HOW TO VIDEO I DID. CHECK IT OUT. THANKS, ALEX
Alex,
I do like that !!
David
Great job, Alex!
When the engine started rolling, I noticed a tall signal lying beside the track. When a signal faints, that's SMOKE!!
Thanks guys
Mike.R when I had the engine running my daughters were upstairs and they were yelling to me to shut the engine DOWN!!!.
ReadingFan I'm telling you it smoked out the whole basement within five minutes
David it's pretty easy to do.
Thanks again to all, Alex
Nice job...
Better order another quart of smoke fluid....
Thanks Stoshu, it smoked out everything.
Alex
Yes I installed the cruise in this engine already, Also there's a guy on you tube that shows how to get the synchronized chuff by just cutting one wire and attaching it to another area. I'm going to find out from a friend of mine who knows which you tube video it is this week and I will let you know. Also it's fairly easy to install the cruise into this engine. You can get the parts from BOXCAR BILL and he will give you the link so you can get the instructions. If you need any help just let me know.
Thanks, Alex
Alex,
You're having too much fun. You can never have too much smoke. Great job. Killian

POW/MIA YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN
Thanks very much Killian, yes I have to say I'm enjoying this a lot. The smoke output is just incredible. That's what so great about this hobby, it makes me forget about all the rough things in my everyday life.
Thanks and god bless, Alex
Nice job Alex! This is on my to-do list for my K-Line Allegheny.
Alex,
Are you running these engines with TMCC? I am thinking about doing the upgrade on a scale K Line Hudson, but I run it conventional (so it isn't running at 18V)

Keep in mind Alex has a newer K-Line by Lionel engine with a fan driven smoke unit. The K-Line scale Hudson has a puffer unit. In addition to the batting you might want to change the resistor. I believe Boxcar Bill can help you out on both items.
Pete
Alex, would you please post complete manufacturing info for this engine (exact model #, etc,) so I'd get the same exact engine and could I then send it to you for the same mods you did on yours?
Ah, you're right Pete. I wasn't sure what kind of smoke unit I had in that engine (I guess I was hoping it was fan forced). Not the case
Roger, you can still improve the smoke output by installing a wire wound resistor of slightly lower resistance (eg 24 instead or 27 ohms). Or I think Bill has replacement fan driven smoke units that may fit in the Hudson. Check out the videos at his website:
Pete
Thanks Keith, a nice simply upgrade with awesome results.
Roeger1 I'm running the Legacy system and I run at 18 volts.
Norton is right is is a fan driven motor.
ogaugeguy this is the K-line by Lionel NYC semi scale steam engine with smoke Lionel rail sounds and TMCC. item # 6-21298 this came out of the 2007 Lionel catalog volume
two. list price was 499.99. Go to the Lionel website and punch this item number it find a product and you will see all the info needed. If you need more info just let me know.
I get all my parts from (BOXCAR BILL) Modern toy train parts.
Thanks to all, Alex
Thank you for the info, Alex. Now, since it's a 5-year-old engine no longer available from Lionel, the search is on to locate one in good or better condition at a fair price.
Ken these engines are out there, you can go to Trainz.com and put it on there wish list and of course put a thread on wanted to buy on this forum. Also there's a lot of hobby shops that sell used trains. do a search on all hobby shop web sites.
Alex
Alex,
That is a fantasic show of smoke. A day after your post, I was smelling smoke that was not from my engines. You do a good job of showing of great work with out spending a load of money.
Are you coming to the Sprinfield OMRA meet?
Take care,
Al
Al...why can't I see the MA3R logo???

Thanks Al, it was very cheap to do, and like you said it smoked out the whole basement and my daughters were upstairs on the main floor and they said to shut it off please. I wish I could make it to the meet, but I won't be able too.
Thanks again, Alex
Wow ! .. I thought my MTH Gas Turbine blew it out ...

isn't it amazing, with just two quick things to change and very cheap.
Thanks, Alex
Alex, I have the 18003 Lackawanna Northern that gets a lot of bad press. Mine works but has the 1988 anemic smoke output. Would your modification work on this engine?
I myself have never had it apart. There were lots of problems with this engine and the 18001 Rock Island when they were released. I had mine rehabbed by a local guy who does repair on the side. There have been MANY threads on the flaws of this engine. On the plus side side it has a metal tender and looks great. Has magne traction, too. Perhaps someone who has worked on these can chime in.
