Hi,
I'm normally a 2 rail guy, but I have a 3 rail issue. I have a early 90's Lionel Chessie Steam Special T-1. The Chug sound stopped working. I just makes a continuous sound. Any Idea what to do that will fix my issue.
Thank You, K W

If I remember correctly they use a chuff micro switch which yours is probably not working, it would help if you have the 6- Lionel engine number!

I believe you are referring to this one https://www.lionelsupport.com/...8-4-T-1-2101-6-18011
In this case, the chuffing is sensed by the tender wheel rolling and magnetic pickup Hall effect sensor.
https://www.lionelsupport.com/...8006-T01Complete.pdf
That axle on the tender has a round magnet- sometimes those fail and crumble or can be jammed and not spinning because of something stuck to the magnet.
There is also the smaller version Lionel 6-8003 Chessie 2-8-4 Berkshire Steam Engine, with Electronic whistle and Mighty Sound of Steam
I've had a couple of these Hall Effect sensors quit on me over the years, so if the magnet looks fine, it's likely that.
Fortunately, at least last I checked, they're not the hardest things to come by. Just unsolder the wires to the old sensor, and solder in the new one. Usually, they stick fine to the original plastic mount over the wheel with a dab of CA or even hot glue.
What ^^Vernon and Mikado said. Also make sure that the magnet wheel didn't shift laterally on its axle away from the sensor pick-up.
Oh, some trivia... The 18011 scale-sized Chessie T-1 used the Hall effect wheel. The 8003 made in 1980 was ironically the last loco I know of that relied on contacts in the smoke unit, a method Lionel introduced in 1971.
Hi To All,
Thank you for all your comments. The magnet looks good and isn't loose on the axel. It is the Model 6-18011. I am in agreement with the Hall Effect Sensor being bad. I wouldn't have known without your very helpful comments Alan, Vernon, Mikado and Ted. I will try to find a sensor. I would just take it to a local repair shop, but none available within 125 miles of Ashland Kentucky so hopefully I can repair it myself.

Another question to all. Is there anyone in the Cincinnati - Columbus Ohio area that works on trains ? I live in the Ashland Kentucky area and no one around here works on trains anymore.

Dixie Union Station is one of them, Mason, OH
Thank you Vernon,
I called them and they don't work on older stuff like my T -1. I did find a guy in Louisville, but was hoping to find someone closer that 4 hours. I just can't work on things like I used to. Wish I could.
