Besides the obvious, that a substantial portion of us (not me this year), receive model train gifts on this day, most of which are probably given and received by the same person (I used to do this a lot), Christmas Day and Lionel trains are an iconic combination in our culture.

With that in mind, let’s celebrate this day by posting a photo or video of any model train, of any gauge and manufacturer, that we are most excited about today. When you do, please  remember: post only what you have taken (so you are the owner) or what you have the written permission of the owner to post, and follow the Forum Terms of Service.

Here’s mine:

Now, show us yours. Arnold

Well Merry Christmas...my kids are adults now so I have Christmas morning to review what is on the forum, we will do presents and dinner when they arrive later.  So honoring Arnold's request, here are some trains that excited me in 2024.

Hornby Type 50 tender loco from 1954

Hornby Type 50 loco

Hornby Type 101 Tank loco from Mar 47 to Apr 54

Hornby LNER 101 Tank engine side view

Hornby Type 20 tender loco...the type 20 had the dubious honor of being the last 0 gauge train manufactured new by Mecanno in 1962.

Hornby Type 20 front quarter

MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY HANUKKAH, BEST WISHES FOR THE NEW YEAR.

Here's some photos, taken in 2020,  of my 2065 Lionel Hudson which I received 68 years ago today.  I still have this engine and the set it came with.  Arnold I know too that you have a 2065 as well.   I'll pull my 2065 off the shelf and run her with that same exact set and post a video here later today after some family visits.

Favorite?  That's like asking which child is your favorite!

Today it is the train around my tree posted to another thread.  Tomorrow it will be the three new Atlas California Zephyr cars that arrive tomorrow in Amtrak that I did not have.  The day after will be the minor revisions I need to make the 3rd Rail Nevada Northern SD7 painting diagram as that project is in production and will ship prior to Chinese New Year.  One will be coming to my house.  So many choices!

From another thread, but the train around my tree this year.

Enjoy. My 2065 came on Christmas in 1954. My first Lionel train.
Lou N.

I’m pretty excited about this Lionel Legacy Boston & Albany Berkshire that arrived early in December. I’ve run it briefly a few times but have been too busy to take a set of pictures and a video.

Best wishes for a Merry Christmas, a Joyful Chanukah, and a Happy, Healthy New Year to all. May you continue to enjoy your trains whether they are new or old…

Okay, after my previous post here on this thread this morning, I went to my trains room and pulled my entire set with the 2065 locomotive from the top display shelf.   There are no words for the total joy I experienced as I watched this set come to life as it ran the inner loop of my layout!!!  All the absolutely wonderful memories and stories of Christmastimes past flooded my memory as this engine and 5 cars worked their magic!   I just stood there grinning from ear to ear.   Here are a few short clips of this train running on my current layout the same as when it ran under the family tree, when Santa brought it to me on Christmas Day 1957.

We stated, Jonathan. I suggest we think of the particular favorite as the favorite this very moment.

Also, charming photo, Jonathan.

Sweet, Lou, and I don’t mean Lou Pinella, the fine baseball player and manager known as Sweet Lou.

As I’ve posted on the Forum before, my 2065 was part of the Lionel 027 freight set known as the Greenball Express, that my parents bought for me as a Christmas gift also around 1954.

Well its not quite trains, but its my Christmas present from my grandkids.  One from Isabel , grandaughter, one from Michael grandson, and one from Max and Blanco the two cats .  They are 1:48 as stated on the box and 1956 so the right era, I can guarantee they will go right on my layout !  So here is my Christmas Day "trains" present.  P.S. I think the cats may have schemed up and got someone else to buy the gift .

Best Wishes Everyone

Very nice, Patrick. My 2065 in the Greenball Express 027 freight set came with the smaller coffin style Lionel Lines tender. Both sets had the operating milk car but otherwise the train cars were different. My set came with a Lionel Lines illuminated Tuscan Red caboose with round portals, not sure about your caboose so I will look at your caboose again. Arnold

PS: looks like the cabooses are the same,

Patrick, that is so cool, especially hearing the wonderful memories it gave you! Wow, a gift from 1957, I wasn’t even born till the following year😮!

Christmas Day, 1959, my godmother and aunt gave me the 128 Animated Newsstand  you can see inside the inner loop a few cars up from the New Haven Alco…….a treasure from the past…..

Happy Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

Peter

The animated newsstand was my mother’s favorite accessory. Below is a photo of mine and a video showing it in action on my layout.

It’s been a fixture on every layout of mine……woefully out of scale, bit I don’t care……I love it!

Here it is on my 1993-2003 layout…….

A view from the 2011-2021 layout……

Peter, would love to see a close up of your Animated News Stand and see it in action. I see it well in your 2nd photo when I enlarge it.

For me Christmas will always be synonymous with trains.   I've turned to the next chapter in my life and I enjoyed reliving the stories of Christmas and trains with my partner Jules, from my first Union Pacific Tyco train from Toys R Us to sharing my most recent layout with my father.  A lifetime of memories.

I'm excited for receiving my two matching BN 1976 themed Atlas hoppers, and more excited for my upcoming layout being built by my longtime friend @Dave Cardiff.  Stay tuned for progress on the layout, a triple track mainline destined to be simply awesome.
