Hi everyone, MTH uses the number 20 for the start of their premium train items and 30 for RailKing. That helps me know if an item is scale or traditional in dealers ads. Does Lionel have some way of differentiating between traditional and scale with their stock numbers? The price doesn't always reflect the difference.

I thank all in advance for your replies.

Originally when Lionel came up with the 5 digit PNs in the mid 1980s it was quite well structured for assigning traditional/collector series PNs and by item type. But in hindsight guess they didnt ever figure on using up all the number in certain classes, so by now the system has become quite messy. The Greenberg Modern era collector books do list the original intentions of the 5 digit PN scheme.

A while back this topic came up, see this post:

It's is far from gospel... But generally speaking a lot of the scale rolling stock have 6-dash numbers in the 17xxx and 27xxx series, and more recently I've seen some in the 19xxx and 29xxx series as well (such as the TankTrain rolling stock).

Having said that, I'm sure there are many exceptions.  So proceed with caution and verify product features before purchasing.
