I'm moving forward with my 8 x 10 layout with tubular track.  The plan with be a variation on the "Steel Town" layout that was feature in OGR in the November, December and January editions.  It's going to be "old school" in that I have 3 interconnected "tables" with 1/2 inch plywood tops.  The were painted green but from what I have read, I think that this weekend I should paint them a shade of brown and then later once the track and some buildings have been installed, "highlight" areas with green paint and a textured roller .  My two questions (at this stage) are:

1) Semi gloss or gloss paint?

and

2) Any suggestions on the shade of brown that have worked for any members in the past that I can get either at Loews or Home Depot?  (Same question for shades of green.)

All suggestions appreciated

whatever is on the mis match shelf at home depot for $2.00 a can. LOL

Jaymark, I know you want old school and tubular track. That is great if that is your ultimate goal. Have you thought about what your modeling desires might be in a few years? Why not take a look at the available scenery products noe available? Get a Scenery Express catalog. Check out Woodland Scenics. Who knows, it may save you some time. And when it comes to most things in modelrailroading, flat is always best, especially on figures. I know I looked silly in shiny clothes in the 70s and 80s. Some people still think I look silly! Of course, shiny as in prototypically painted diesels is ok. I know you were referring to train boards, I just expanded on the question. Good luck!

Hi Jaymark, If you anticipate portions of your board being visible after you have applied all scenery, i.e., buildings, roads, trees, grass, soil, shrubs, then I agree with your choice of green. Over the years I have used flat green on Christmas garden layouts and have been satisfied. I do recommend and have used flat green. I hope my memory is correct here, but I believe it was modeler Sam Powell who mentioned that set designers for theatrical plays paint the entire background flat black, allowing the audiences attention drawn to the colors of the important sets and the characters and their dress. It seems many modelers now also paint basement ceilings above their layouts  flat black, drawing attention away from unsightly floor boards, braces and wiring. So, my suggestion is go with flat green (the shade commonly used for "floor paint"), or go with flat black, and get your greens, browns and siennas, etc. from the wide selection of scenery products available. As you proceed, I am sure you will be discovereing things you like and will be satisfied with your layout. Best of luck

From a previous post.
I'm going to buy some cheap latex paint tomorrow and prime all the benchwork in some earth tone before I do any track laying. Yes, we use a grey latex. Benjamin Moore Flat Finish Base N215 3 B  MIX (BK) 6.5 oz (BR) 2.75 oz (OY) 13 oz/ Quart can. The attempt was more of a medium earth brown. I took a part/piece of the module that had been painted previously to the paint store and had them match existing color.................................................

Flat latex paint applied to a module before trackwork and final detail
