Well, I need help.

While trying to load a new MTH locomotive difficulty set it. So I asked a buddy to plug in the handheld into the TIU, thinking perhaps it was a communication issue remote to TIU, and in error he plugged it into the AIU input rather than the remote input.

Handheld remote went dead! It is bricked. Installed new batteries, cleaned contacts, opened to ensure all is seated and checked for stuck buttons........................ DEAD.

I disconnected the TIU and was able to reinstall current TIU software. I confirmed via an older backup remote (running on 2.0) that 6.1 is on both TIUs, current unit and on an older backup TIU.

I have been trying to hopefully bring the remote back via a software reload. No luck, laptop or desktop PC cannot seem to be able to find the TIU once the remote(s) is connected. The loader did find the TIU(s) quickly when upgrading the TIU software, but no luck on remote.

I have tried different coms ports, two different computers, three different USB to Serial and direct USB on the newer TIU and connecting as per instructions and power up as last item.

So now I have two TIUs with current and two remotes, one bricked and one with old software.

What can i do? HELP!

Any ideas how to unbrick remote if one can?

Any alternatives to getting older remote upgraded?

Well I think that remote is fried which is exactly what happens when you accidentally plug it into the AIU port. Not sure if you have many or any options to repair the remote. The last one I saw like this was able to be repaired by MTH but that was many years ago when they had a service department to handle such things.

As for upgrading the remotes, what specifically is your process for doing this? There is only one way to do it and it is simple but will fail if the procedure is not followed to the letter. The most common issue I find is that people upgrade the TIU successfully but fail to remove to 3.5mm stereo cable from the MIC & AUDIO ports when doing the remote.

Update: Finally got both TIUs updated with current software. I was able to get back up remote updated to 6.1. So now have an older TIU connected to test / program track and newer TIU connected to track. Still getting strange messages on tack remote . If I factory reset TIU does that revert back to original software version?

pS Bricked remote is now a paperweight.
